The Pheasant Tail (Soft Hackle) is a versatile, high-movement variation of the classic nymph—designed to imitate emerging insects and trigger strikes from trout feeding in the film or just below it.
Tied on a barbed hook and offered in sizes 14 and 16.
Built with natural pheasant tail fibers and finished with a soft hackle collar, this pattern adds lifelike motion that pulses with the current. Unlike standard nymphs, the soft hackle breathes and moves on the swing, making it deadly when fish are keyed in on emerging mayflies.
Fish it dead drift, swing it at the end of your drift, or use it in a tight-line setup—this fly excels when trout are feeding actively below the surface.
